The Norwegian White Ribbon Campaign

Oslo, October 2000-10-19

1.      Events, dates, objectives

The Norwegian campaign against violence against women, 2000,  will be launched on November 1.  with a one-day conference and press release of the goals of the campaign.

The conference will be opened by the Minister of Justice and followed up by speakers from Red Cross, The National Centre for Gender Equality, the treatment centre Alternative To Violence and The White Ribbon Campaign. The conference will also hold the opening of the Swedish writer Jan Guilloeu’s drama: The Evilness.

From November 13. to November 27. all the busses, tramps and metro in Oslo will carry special posters made for the campaign. These posters will also be spread nation-wide to be used locally in the campaign. There will be three different posters with different images and messages, saying:

- violence against women is a secret

- violence are learned: from grandfather to father to son

-   break the silence, you can create a change

In November there will also be distributed information about violence against women to all local health centres in Norway. This will give them more knowledge about domestic violence and prepare them for facing the problem when men and women ask for help at a local level.

We will also distribute a special issue of the Red Cross magazine on domestic violence to all members and local offices of Red Cross.  A supplement to the magazine will be printed in larger numbers to be distributed locally by members of Red Cross and White Ribbon Campaign.

2.      The Campaign’s promotion on a regional and national level

On a regional level we have had two meetings this year in The Nordic White Ribbon Campaign. We have co-ordinated our plans and actions and together we have planned to work with the Baltic countries and Russia in the future, with the help of the Daphne program.

On the national level The White Ribbon Campaign has worked together with The Norwegian Red Cross, The National Centre for Gender Equality and the treatment centre The Alternative to Violence. The reason for this is that The White Ribbon Campaign is too small an organisation to work successfully on a national level by itself. With the initiative from White Ribbon and the co-operation with other organisation we have been able to launch the largest campaign on domestic violence ever in Norway. See events above.

3.      Our specific contributions

First of all our contribution has been on awareness raising on a national level, with posters, leaflets, advertising and a special issue of the Red Cross magazine on domestic violence.

Posters: Three different posters, with images from one of the most famous Norwegian photographers, Knut Bry, distributed all around Norway.

Leaflets: One leaflet with the size of a plastic card with four pages, will be distributed nation-wide and put on stand in liqueur stores, drugstores, health centres and so on, for customers to pick up. The leaflets design is connected to the design of the posters and images and texts will overlap. In the leaflet there will also be special telephone numbers where people can call to get help.

A supplement of the Red Cross magazine will also be distributed nation-wide with the help of local activists.

A special information letter will be sent to all health centres in Norway, to inform them about the campaign and how to better help men and women if they are batters or victims of domestic violence. One problem is often that professionals working in health care do not want to face the problem of domestic violence. We therefore need to end the silence also within the professional milieu.

The Norwegian Campaign are working together with The National Centre for Gender Equality to produce an education kit for Norwegian schools. This work has just begun.

5.      Conclusion

We are extremely satisfied with the support from The Daphne program. Without this support it would have been impossible to launch such a large campaign in Norway. We now have the possibility to draw on ideas and experiences from other European countries and WRC activists in these countries.

We really look forward to new support from the Daphne program, which is important if we shall succeed in taking the actions and the campaign to other countries in the region.
