MVP STRATEGIES
Gender Violence Prevention Education & Training

http://www.jacksonkatz.com/

MVP Strategies provides gender violence prevention training and materials to high schools, colleges, fraternities, athletic organizations, the U.S. military services, law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and small and large corporations. Our primary mission is to empower men who are not abusive toward women to confront men who are.

The MVP Strategies training program is shaped by the idea that men who have status with other men are in a particularly powerful position to influence the way men and boys view and treat women and girls. The program also challenges men who have credibility with other men to use their status and power to repudiate any definition of masculinity that equates being a man with being sexist, disrespectful or violent toward women, or bullying toward other males.

Our highly interactive training sessions and educational materials are based on the acclaimed Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Model, which requires that our racially diverse training teams work with  men as empowered bystanders, not against them as potential perpetrators. MVP's innovative bystander approach helps reduce the defensiveness men often feel around discussions of rape, battering, sexual harassment, and gay-bashing, creating new possibilities for men's leadership on these issues.

Our chief training tool is the MVP Playbook, which encourages men to respond constructively, as bystanders, to a series of scenarios depicting abusive male behavior. Each customized version of the Playbook transports participants into scenarios as witnesses to actual or potential abuse, then challenges them to consider a number of concrete options for intervention. Structured discussions about specific cases of abuse often lead to open, wide-ranging discussions about masculinity, gender relations, abuses of power and conformist behavior.

The MVP Model, which includes a women's component based on the complementary principle of women and girls as empowered bystanders, was designed in 1993 by Jackson Katz, a nationally known activist and lecturer. Housed initially at Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, where the program continues to reach thousands of middle school, high school and college students in eastern Massachusetts and around the country, the MVP Program was the first large-scale effort of its kind to enlist high school, collegiate and professional athletes as agents to prevent men's violence against women.

Katz founded MVP Strategies in 1996 to take the MVP Model beyond sports culture into other traditionally male arenas such as the military.  The MVP-Marine Corps program is the first system-wide gender violence prevention initiative in the history of the U.S. armed services.  MVP-MC trainings have been held in the U.S. and Japan, and MVP trainers have worked with personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as with Division. I athletic programs, the NCAA, the AmeriCorps national service program, fraternities, & hundreds of colleges, high schools, middle schools & community groups.
