Introduction
The National Clearinghouse on Family Violence has updated its
listing of treatment programs for men who abuse their partners. In
this edition, the 160 treatment programs are listed by province from
the east to west coast and, within each province/territory, are
listed alphabetically by community. Some facilities have chosen to
provide their street address; others have provided a mailing address
or a municipality only.
Where appropriate, the organization to which the program is
affiliated is listed. Also included is information about any
referral requirements and if fees are charged.
In most instances, the administrative telephone number for the
facility is listed. Dedicated crisis lines have been indicated as
such. In some cases, a 1-800 number is listed. With the exception of
the 1-800 number for the National Clearinghouse on Family Violence,
these 1-800 numbers are accessible only within the local area code.
When calling from outside the area code, you must dial 1-(area
code)-(administrative number). Where appropriate, facsimile numbers
as well as electronic mail addresses have been provided.
Although most treatment programs are open to all abusive men, some
structure their treatment to serve candidates with specific needs.
Candidate evaluation is done not only to determine whether a client
may benefit from treatment but to give program personnel an
opportunity to set conditions for successful treatment before
accepting the candidate. Few programs endorse a single approach or
model for treatment. For example, some programs offer individual
counselling as well as a support group, others offer anger
management workshops. Waiting lists are common when seeking
treatment for assaultive behavior.
The growth of treatment programs for men who abuse their partners
was influenced by an increase in services for battered women, an
increased awareness of the need not only for reaction to, but for
the prevention of family violence and greater awareness of issues
related to spousal abuse.

The following definitions and codes are used to describe, in
general, characteristics of the treatment program:
Org. = the affiliated or sponsoring agency, or also where the
program may be housed
MC = mandatory clients, referred by Parole offices and Probation
offices
VC = voluntary clients, or those referred by other community
agencies
F/C = fees (Although many programs list there are fees charged, most
programs have a sliding fee scale and special provision for those
who cannot pay the full fee. Some programs have fees for parts of
their program, eg. assessment.)
